Edinburgh students launch Scotland-wide university trading competition
A student team from Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh has brought together investment societies from seven Scottish universities for a year-long virtual trading competition starting this month.

A student-led venture called Green Turtle Trades, formed by members of Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh, is launching a Scotland-wide investment and trading competition on 5 October.
The contest brings together investment societies from seven Scottish universities, giving students the chance to manage virtual portfolios over the course of the academic year. Organisers say the aim is to give participants hands-on experience of investing, trading and risk management without using real money.
Building industry links
Beyond the competition itself, the team behind Green Turtle Trades says it wants to strengthen ties between Scotland’s universities, the financial industry and graduates entering the sector. As part of that effort, they are planning an end-of-year event that would bring competing students together with professionals from the investment and trading world.
The initiative is being run by students rather than a university department or corporate sponsor, reflecting a grassroots attempt to connect Scotland’s academic finance community with industry practitioners.
