Newhailes tops list of Scotland's best free days out, new research shows
A study of five-star reviews has named East Lothian's Newhailes estate as Scotland's highest-rated free attraction, as families across the UK look for low-cost ways to fill the autumn break.
Scottish sites feature strongly nationally
New research from MyUKTours has ranked Britain’s best free attractions based on the proportion of five-star reviews they receive, with two Scottish sites making the UK’s top ten.
Newhailes, the National Trust for Scotland property near Musselburgh, was rated Scotland’s top free day out, with 74.93% of reviews giving it five stars. That put it seventh in the UK-wide rankings. The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh also featured in the national top ten, in ninth place, with 74.69% five-star reviews.
Nationally, Cardinham Forest in Cornwall topped the list as Britain’s best-rated free attraction, with 89.53% five-star reviews, ahead of the National Memorial Arboretum in the West Midlands and the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford.
Cost pressures driving demand for free activities
The research was published as families face rising costs for days out and school holiday activities. According to the study, the average UK family day out now costs three figures, while parents have spent an average of £1,662 during school holidays this year. The report also cited BBC News coverage suggesting middle-class households are cutting back on leisure spending.
Against that backdrop, MyUKTours said its analysis was intended to highlight free options for families looking to make the most of the autumn period without added expense.
Regional breakdown
The study identified a top-rated free attraction for every UK region. Alongside Newhailes for Scotland, other regional leaders included Durham Cathedral in the North East, the Lady Lever Art Gallery in the North West, the Royal Albert Hall in London, St Fagans National History Museum in Wales, the National Railway Museum in Yorkshire and Humber, the University Museum of Zoology in the East of England, the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland, and Sherwood Pines in the East Midlands.
Andrew Wills, a private chauffeur and UK tour guide, said the country was rich in cultural experiences, adding that many of the sites on the list were among his own favourites when planning private tours for visitors from overseas.
The findings suggest Edinburgh and the Lothians remain a strong draw for cost-conscious visitors and families, with Newhailes and the National Museum of Scotland both scoring highly against attractions across the rest of the UK.
